Honoree: Dr. Kalpana Chawla (1961-2003), who was born in India, was an astronaut. On January 17, 2003 she joined six other members of the crew on a 16-day flight in the Colombia Space Shuttle. Tragically, on February 1, 2003, 16 minutes prior to the scheduled landing, she and her crew perished.
