Honoree: Father Vincent R. Capodanno (1929-1967) was born in Staten Island and ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1957. In 1965, he joined the Navy Chaplain Corps and was assigned to the First Marine Division in Vietnam. During operations in the Que Son Valley, the Marines encountered a large North Vietnamese unit of approximately 2,500 men. Twenty-six Marines were killed. Father Capodanno went among the wounded and dying, giving last rites and was killed by enemy fire. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. (Oddo)
