Honoree: Officer Thomas P. Ruotolo was 30 years old when he was killed in the line of duty on February 14, 1984. On that date, he and his partner responded to report of a stolen moped. At a gas station at the corner of 149th Street and Bruckner Avenue, they observed the suspect refilling a moped with gasoline. In the ensuing gun battle, the suspect fatally shot P.O. Ruotolo and wounded both his partner and an off-duty officer who came to their aid. The suspect was subsequently apprehended, tried and sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. He will not be eligible for parole until 2024 . Officer Ruotolo, assigned to the 41st Precinct, had received eight citations for outstanding service during his three years with the NYPD.
