PrentissEdith Prentiss Way (Manhattan) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of Overlook Terrace and 186th Street Honoree: Edith Prentiss (d. 2021) was a leader in the fight to ensure equality and accessibility for people with disabilities in the city and across the country. She served as president of both the 504 Democratic Club and the Disabled in Action of Metropolitan New York City organization. Her advocacy, helped to get elevators installed at subway stations across the city, including at Dyckman Street; and helped to provide free bus rides for seniors when subway elevators needed repairs. She testified many times in support of stronger legislation around disability rights. She played a major role in increasing the number of accessible taxis in the City through her work as chair of the Taxis for All Campaign. She held leadership positions with Community Board 12 (Manhattan), Manhattan Borough President Disability Task Force, Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA and New York City Transit Riders Council, MTA New York City Transit Advisory Committee for Transit Accessibility, Long Island Rail Road ADA Task Force, NYC Office of Emergency Management Special Needs Task Force, and Washington Heights and Inwood Council on Aging.
