ColeJanet Cole Plaza (Queens) Present name:41st Avenue Location:10th Street and 12th Street Honoree: Janet Cole (1954-1995) was President and Co-Founder of the Queensbridge Tenants Association and a member of Astoria Concerned Neighbors. She also led the effort to have the Drug Elimination Outreach Program brought to Queensbridge Houses.(RGPR) LL:1998/51 Rev. Dr. V. Seymour Cole Way (Bronx) Present name:None Location:At the northeast corner of East 227th Street and Paulding Avenue Honoree: Rev. Dr. V. Seymour Cole (d. 2017) founded Bronx Bethany Church of the Nazarene in 1964. In its first 13 years he commuted from Connecticut, approximately 60 miles each way, to pastor the fledgling church. Rev. Cole led the congregation for 36 years before retiring in 2000. In addition to building a strong religious community, he contributed to the larger Northeast Bronx community in numerous ways. As Vice President of the 47th Precinct Clergy Coalition he marched against drug pushers and fostered safety and youth development. He received many civic, political and religious awards and was a sought after speaker at conferences in the United States and the Caribbean. Bronx Bethany has also been involved in the development of churches in Pakistan and Colombia and has constructed churches in White Plains, NY and New Rochelle, NY. (King) LL:2019/24 |
