Hetty Fox Lane (Bronx)
Present name:None
Location:At the southwest corner of Lyman Place and Freedman Street
Honoree:  Hetty Agnes Fox (1937-2019), was a writer, musician, educator and community activist. Born in Harlem, she moved to the Bronx in 1940 and attended St. Anthony of Padua Elementary and Cathedral High School. She went on to study at Hunter College where she learned Russian, majored in psychology, perfected her bridge game in the college cafeteria, and earned her B.A. degree in 1962. In 1970, she found a block in decline and began a decades-long effort to rescue abandoned buildings and assist struggling families. She began by renovating and rescuing one-family and two-family homes on her block, and eventually turned one of them, at 1370 Lyman Place, into a center for arts and education. In 1977 she started “Play Street," which attracts over 100 kids daily, to give kids who cannot afford summer camp another option. Her father taught her African dance at an early age. She played the traditional and five-drum electronic conga, mastering them enough to tour Europe with Jazz artist Ornette Coleman and record an album with saxophonist Archie Shepp. She self-published two books: “Neighborhood Rules of Order” and “Jealousy be Gone.” She was instrumental in promoting the Bronx African American History Project at Fordham University and is included in the book, “Before the Fires,” an oral history of Blacks in the Bronx from the 1930s to the 1960s. She was featured in the PBS documentary, “Decade of Fire,” which revisits the 1970s when the South Bronx was abandoned to flames by the city and rescued by its residents. (Gibson)
