BushbyThomasina Bushby Way (Bronx) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of 174th Street and Davidson Avenue Honoree: Thomasina Bushby (1940-2021), a longtime professor of Sociology and Social Sciences at Monroe College, was a community leader in Morris Heights. Active in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, she worked to increase participation in politics and develop local talent in the Jerome A Greene Democratic Club. She was secretary of Community Board 5 in the Bronx and Executive Director of the Morris Heights Neighborhood Improvement Association. In 1981, she helped establish the Morris Heights Health Center and was a member of its board for 40 years. As a Professor of Sociology and the Social Sciences she taught first at the College of New Rochelle and then for 35 years, at Monroe College with a focus on marriage and the family and criminal justice. Throughout the years she worked with various community organizations such as CASA, which advocated for tenant rights; the NAACP Bronx Chapter; Black United Leadership of the Bronx;, South Bronx People for Change; the Black Child Development Institute; the 174th Street Homeowner Association; and the Office of Black Ministry of the Archdiocese of New York. She was active in successful voter education efforts; for the effective affirmative-action policies; for the creation of crimes prevention programs. She helped develop Harrison Circle, a senior citizen development as well as the 174th Street Homeowner Association, and worked on various political campaigns. At multiple times throughout the years she stepped into the role of President of the Parish Council of her church, St. Francis of Assisi Church, as as being a longstanding member of the church’s Rosary Society.
