Honoree:  Tenzing Norgay (1914-1986) was, with Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. In 1999, they were among TIME’s 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Sherpas are an ethnc group in the Himalayan region, renowned for their endurance and skill in mountaineering. Sherpas have guided many mountaineers and explorers, including Sir Edmund, in the extreme high altitude regions of the Himalayas.
