Honoree: This co-naming honors the Tibetan Community of New York and New Jersey, Inc. (TCNYNJ), established in 1979 and located at 32-01 57th Street in Woodside. The Tibetan Community of New York & New Jersey, Inc. is the center for the largest concentration of Tibetans in the Americas, around 12,000. Tibetan Americans first started to come to America in the early 1960’s. The center has worked for decades to preserve the Tibetan language, culture, and customs as members of the community face the challenges of adapting to a new society, while maintaining their own.
