GritoEl Grito de Lares (Bronx) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of Kingsbridge Road and Morris Avenue Honoree: Grito can be translated as outcry or protest. On September 23, 1868 between 600 and 1000 men, poorly armed and without training, marched on Lares and took the town without any resistance before the Spaniards became aware of the revolt. The group then formed a provisional government declaring an independent Puerto Rico Republic. The following day, the group marched to San Sebastián where the Spanish militia awaited them. Within 24 hours the revolt was put down by the Spanish government. However, shortly after, Spain instituted various political reforms. Lares is considered the birthplace of Puerto Rican Nationalism.
