Honoree: Herbert Ellis Smith, a decorated naval veteran of the Vietnam War, began working for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in 1973. Over his 37-years career, he managed more than 85 New York City Parks and supervised over 800 employees. He was a first responder at the World Trade Center on 9/11 and joined the recovery effort as a heavy equipment operator. He was also a volunteer and supporter of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and several other charities. (Oddo)

Honoree: Hon. Vito J. Titone (1929-2005) served as an Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals from 1985 to 1998. He taught law at Staten Island College and also St. John’s. He ran for the State Senate twice unsuccessfully but was elected to the State Supreme Court on Staten Island in 1969. Governor Hugh L. Carey named him to the Appellate Division in 1975. Staten Island Legal Services holds an annual Hon. Vito J. Titone Awards Luncheon celebrating individuals and programs that improve the quality of life for all Staten Island residents. (Rose)

Honorable Louis R. Jerome Way (Staten Island)

Honoree: Louis R. Jerome (1926-2015),a decorated naval veteran of World War II, had a private law practice until 1965 and then served in the state attorney general's office. From 1971 until his retirement 27 years later, he was a judge for the state Workers' Compensation Board. Following an incident in his courtroom at the World Trade Center in July 1978, he was termed a "hero judge." An unemployed machinist whose claim was under consideration threatened to blow up the state compensation office with 80 pounds of dynamite and a grenade. More than 4,000 people were evacuated while Judge Jerome and three others were held hostage. As the siege dragged on for nine hours, the judge took the matter into his own hands by charging the machinist with a state flagpole. Judge Jerome was also an active member of the Republican Party; the Cespino-Russo Post of the American Legion; and the American Committee on Italian Migration. (Rose)
