Major Joseph R. Sciacca Way (Staten Island)

Honoree: Joseph R. Sciacca (1917-2018) was born in Manhattan's Little Italy but moved as a child to Grant City on Staten Island, where he lived until his death at the age of 100. He attended P.S. 33, P.S. 41 and Tottenville H.S., and went on to New York Law School and Fordham University. After U. S. Army service in World War II, he worked for Buitoni Foods Corporation from 1947 until 1989, rising to the position of regional sales manager. He was also Deputy Commissioner of the NYS Athletic Commission from 1965 to 1975. Mr. Sciacca was president of the Staten Island Council of the Boy Scouts of America; was active in St. Christopher's R.C. Church, where he was an usher for more than 50 years and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was also very active in the Knights of Columbus, Manresa Council, Richmond Memorial Hospital Association, Staten Island Cancer Society, and American Legion Post 316. He was on the Boards of Bayley Seton Hospital and of St. Elizabeth Ann Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was active in the Republican Party and held leadership positions including the Vice Chairmanship of the Richmond County Republican Committee from 1969 to 1972, and was a Delegate to the 1972 Republican National Convention. Honoree: Mark Herman (1933-2016) led the progressive wing of the Democratic Party on Staten Island for 50 years and was one of the longest-serving members of a Democratic County Committee in NYS history. He was appointed a NYC Commissioner of Elections representing Staten Island in 2000, a post he held for several years. He also served the borough with his 23-year tenure on Community Board 1, including several terms as vice chairman. In addition, he was a manager for West Shore Little League; president of the Silver Lake Civic Association; a volunteer mediator/arbitrator with the NYS court system; and a docent at Fort Wadsworth. He participated in the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago and was a McGovern delegate at the 1972 convention in Miami. A U.S. Army veteran, he worked on Wall Street for 12 years and later became a branch manager for the former OTB, retiring in 1995. (Rose)

Honoree: Mary “Mary C” Cali-Dalton (1953-2019), after graduating from Bishop Kearney H.S. in 1971, was for several years a singer in a band called "The Underground Railroad," performing Rock, Jazz and Disco in Brooklyn and Manhattan venues as well as for parties and weddings. In 2002, she moved to New Dorp Beach and instantly fell in love with the neighborhood. When New Dorp Beach was hit by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, although herself a victim of the storm, she worked tirelessly to make sure her neighbors and co-workers did not go without help. She set up clothing and food donations in Recreation Centers on the island and helped those who had lost their homes. Mary joined the NYC Parks and Recreation in 1999 as a WEP participant and is recognized as a true success story for the Parks Department. After rising through the ranks, she was Chief of Recreation for Staten Island from 2003 until 2019. Also, in 2006, she became Vice President of the Emerald Society and was the Society's President from 2009 until her passing in 2019. She had a hand in so many things in our community between the parks department and outreach for people struggling with addictions. Mary had struggled with alcohol addiction herself and was 20 years sober to the date of her death. (Matteo)

When the battle for a new South Richmond Plan came about she helped mobilize enough community support to have the plan adopted, thus saving the wetlands and open spaces from overdevelopment.

Honoree: The Staten Island chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans has an existing memorial site on the esplanade at the former U.S. Coast Guard Base in St. George. It is dedicated to those who served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during the Second World War and in particular to those who did not survive “The Battle of the Oceans” in which 6,834 Merchant Marines were killed, 11,000 wounded, 604 were taken prisoners of war and 61 died in prison camps.

Honoree: Monsignor James J. Dorney, born in the Bronx, was ordained a priest in 1958. He served in the Bronx and Manhattan before coming to Staten Island in 1976 as assistant pastor of St. Margaret Mary R.C. Church in Midland Beach. In 1983, he was assigned as pastor of St. Peter's where he served for the remainder of his life. He was elevated to monsignor in 1995 by Pope John Paul II. He served as chaplain to the U.S. Coast Guard, the New York Police Department, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Knights of Columbus and the Richmond Division Holy Name Society. He was a trustee emeritus of Richmond University Medical Center and a board member emeritus of Project Hospitality. He also was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and an honorary member of the Notre Dame Club of Staten Island. He took part in the annual Unity Night service that brings together Staten Island's Christians, and he was there at most ecumenical and interfaith events. A strong supporter of the arts, he often invited music, drama and arts organizations to perform. Monsignor Dorney died in 2015 at the age of 83. (Rose)

Honoree: Monsignor Vincent Bartley (1933-2018) was a missionary in Nigeria immigrating to New York. As pastor at St. Paul’s R.C. Church in New Brighton, he oversaw the merger of St. Paul’s and Assumption churches in 2007, and was the spiritual leader of the youth group at Holy Child R.C. Church. As a member of the Inter-Religious Leadership and the Staten Island Immigrants’ Council he participated in rallies and vigils for immigrants’ rights , the lives of undocumented immigrants, and in support of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). He also advocated for continued Food Stamp/SNAP benefits for Staten Island’s hungry families, and assisted families struggling with substance abuse. (Rose)

Honoree: Rosemary Cappozalo (1939-2009) taught dance to two generations of women on Staten Island and was the driving force behind the revival of the St. George Theatre. Six of her students went on to become Rockettes and others danced on Broadway. She purchased and restored the St. George Theatre through her not-for-profit Richmond Dance Ensemble. The theatre once hosted notables like Al Jolson, Kate Smith and Guy Lombardo. She donated tickets to the Seamen's Society for Children and Families and other organizations to ensure all Staten Islanders could be exposed to the arts. She also gave free dance instruction to underprivileged students, helped dancers get college scholarships, taught therapeutic dance classes for women recovering from cancer surgery and staged recitals to raise money for numerous charities. Honoree: This designation marked the 100th anniversary of The Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, founded in 1903 as a self-help organization for immigrant Italians. Soon after, it erected a meeting hall on White Plains Avenue In 1937, Vito Russo, and 46 other members of the Society, built the shrine honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel, on Amity Street. Vito Russo maintained the shrine until his death in 1954.
