Honoree: Fannie Pettie (1899-1955) was born in Georgia, attended Georgia State College, and later graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. After earning a graduate degree in social work and housing at New York University, she was a Social Investigator for the Department of Social Services in Brooklyn. She was an active member of Brooklyn's Nazarene Congregational Church and the Director of its Cradle Roll division, where she helped develop prenatal/parenting classes for expectant parents. Additionally, she was an active participant in the local block association and was the link between community development workers and a range of other service providers, such as the police, social workers and teachers. She was a co-founder and a life member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; a members of the Delta Alpha Zeta Graduate Chapter in Brooklyn; and is credited with organizing the Omicron Beta Chapter in Brooklyn. Honoree: Father Sepe (1929-1994), a native of Queens, was ordained in 1954. After some brief initial postings in Brooklyn, at St. Michaels and then at St. Anselm's, he was assigned St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Williamsburg. He served there for 32 years, becoming its administrator in 1965 and its pastor in 1978.

Honoree: Father Connie Mobley (1926-2008), a World War II veteran, became Deacon of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in 1948 and was elected Assistant Pastor in 1959. He also served as Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Coney Island. He was instrumental in increasing membership and efforts to improve the church building. In 1971, he founded the United Community Baptist Mission and led 80 parishioners in the “Grand March” into 2512 Mermaid Avenue. Honoree: Father Michael McGivney (1852-1890) founded the Knights of Columbus, the Roman Catholic fraternal order that now has more than 1.8 million members. Ordained in 1877 Father McGivney served mainly poor, immigrant parishes in New Haven and Thomaston, Connecticut. There he saw the need for an organization that would strengthen religious faith and also help overwhelmed by illness or death of the breadwinner. The K. of C. was chartered by the Connecticut Legislature in 1882.

Honoree:  Father Paul Schneirla (1916-2014) became pastor of St. Mary’s Antiochan Othodox Church at its founding in 1951 and served continuously for over 50 years until his retirement in 2002. He was also a general board member of the National Council of Churches since the 1940’s and was the last surviving member of the original founders of the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas. He served as a priest of the Antiochian Archdiocese for 71 years and was the first chairman of its Department of Christian Education, he served as Dean of the Atlantic Deanery and the first editor of The Word Magazine. Honoree: Introduced by Council Member Brannan June 4, 1954 – May 2, 2014 Walter gave his life serving the people of this city, ultimately succumbing to illness related to the rescue and recovery work he participated in after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. He was a lifelong New Yorker who was born and raised in Brooklyn. He attended Holy Name in Park Slope and Brooklyn Technical High School. For 38 years, he served as a member of BRAVO Volunteer Ambulance, serving the Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights communities as an EMT, Board Member, and Vice President of Operations. For 36 years, he worked for FDNY-EMS. His career was his passion and through his work as an instructor at the FDNY-EMS Academy, he imparted his knowledge and experience on so many young men and women who continue to serve today. As an officer, he helped mold future generations of heroes by mentoring, guiding, and leading by example.

Honoree: Peter Harry Leone (1917-2004) was a bottom gunner on a B24 during World War II. He was shot down over Ploesti (Romania) and was a POW. After the war, he was instrumental in helping the exiled Princess Catherine of Romania, a friend to the American POW’s at Ploesti. In 1960 he turned a small pizzeria into a very popular Italian restaurant, Casa Bella. After selling the restaurant, he was a volunteer at the Brooklyn Veterans Hospital and was active in several veterans’ organizations.

She worked with the Community Board, elected officials, and city agencies on many projects to benefit community. Among these was the successful campaign to obtain capital funding for the rehabilitation of this playground.

Honoree: Frank and Doris Bell contributed to the community by the encouragement they gave to others who sought advice on overcoming their personal problems regarding their business endeavors, social interaction and financial obstacles. In 1968, they opened the Frank R. Bell Funeral Home. Their success over the past six decades was based on their humanitarian concern to serve those families, mostly in the neighborhood, who could not afford the cost of a funeral for their loved ones. Frank R. Bell Funeral Home has hired dozens of employees, some of whom have gone on to start their own businesses. Today, there are seventeen full-time staff members at Frank R. Bell Funeral Home who continue to enjoy a very comfortable standard of living in the community. 2017 will mark 60 years since the Frank R. Honoree: Frank Scollo (d. 2020) originally from Argentina, was raised in Bensonhurst, married and established a community-based business in Mill Island. In 1997, he opened up his first Pizza Damore in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. In 2006, he opened a second Pizza Damore on Mill Avenue in Mill Island. Not only did his family-owned businesses hire from within the community, he also contributed greatly in terms of community service. He donated food, the use of his restaurant for community events. He joined the local church and had served many organizations including Knights of Columbus, Toys for Tots (annual Maimonides Medical Center), Santa for Kids, Tommy Meo Scholarship Fund, local leagues, Police Precinct Council, Fire Department and Veteran groups. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy many in the community without electricity, water, food. He left his flooding problem at home and ran into the restaurant to begin cleaning and cooking for those in need.
