Honoree: Bartolomeo Giove (1954-2019) was born in Italy. After coming to America, he and his two brothers worked as landscapers during the day and at a pizzeria at night. A few years later, he and his brothers opened the first Brother’s Pizza. They created job opportunities for the Port Richmond community and also contributed to various charity events, schools and fundraisers. Among the organizations they supported were Project Hospitality, the Detective Salvatore J. Cafiso Foundation, and Hurricane Sandy relief organizations. In 2010, the pizzeria celebrated its 35th Anniversary with a three-day long celebration of discounted slices of pizza. (Rose)

Honoree: Ben Marino (d. 1988) was was a businessman and civic leader in New Dorp. In the early 1980s, he became the president of the New Dorp Merchants Association. He donated to many organizations including local little league teams, Pee Wee football, beauty pageants, spelling bees, girls' softball, and the Miss Staten Island scholarship. He was awarded the “Gold Broom Award” for his active role in cleaning up litter in his community. The Deborah Heart and Lung Association honored him as “Man of the Year” for his charitable work. For his dedication to the community, November 18, 1980 was proclaimed “Ben Marino Day” by the Staten Island Borough President. (Matteo)

Honoree: Bertha Simons Lee (1930-2014) was an active member of St. Philips Baptist Church. She served as a member of the board of trustees; as financial secretary; as president of the Senior Usher Board; and as executive chairperson of the Charles K. Smith Scholarship Committee, which offered college scholarships to high school seniors who were members of the church and non-members in the community. Ms. Lee was also active in the Staten Island community a a member of the National Association of Negro Women of Staten Island; Community Board 1; the Port Richmond Neighborhood Watch Committee; the Staten Island NAACP; and a board member of the Northfield LDC. Honoree:  William H. “Bill” Hughes (1930-2018) was the bandleader, director and played trombone in the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. He joined the orchestra in 1953 and later became bandleader in 2003 after the death of Grover Mitchell. He traveled the world, entertaining crowds at famous venues. He also performed and recorded with Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Bill Eckstine, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Williams. Honoree: Bobby Smith (d. 2008) was called the Mayor of Forest Avenue. After serving in Vietnam , he taught physical education at Sacred Heart School in West Brighton. He volunteered and donated food for the runners and volunteers at NYC Marathon start at Fort Wadsworth every year. Every also organized, at his own expense, trips to Yankee Stadium for Staten Island youth who could not afford tickets to the games.

Honoree: Boimah Cooper (1999-2006) was discovered by a group from the Staten Island Liberian Community Association (SILCA) during a Humanitarian Relief Mission. He was found under a tree crying and unable to walk with bones bulging from his back. The group brought him to America for spinal reconstructive surgery. During his year in the U.S., he attended PS 57 and basically adopted the children as his extended family.

As a result of the accident, District Attorney Daniel M. Donavan asked the City Council’s Committee on Public Safety for more stringent legislation for punishing dangerous and deadly drivers.

Honoree: Brother Kevin McDonnell (1924-2002), a member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, was a teacher and track coach at St. Peter’s Boys High School for over 40 years. He was first at St. Peter’s from 1953 to 1960. After assignments at other schools, he returned to St Peter’s in 1966 and remained there for the rest of his career. He taught history, math and religion while continuing his involvement with track.
