GarnerEric Garner Way (Staten Island) Present name:None Location:At the southwest corner of Bay Street and Victory Boulevard Honoree: Eric Garner died on July 17, 2014 as a result of an NYPD officer who put him in a chokehold, a maneuver against NYPD rules, for illegally selling cigarettes. The incident sparked outrage across the country when video of the incident was released with Eric Garner pinned to the ground repeatedly stating that he could not breathe and eventually losing consciousness. He died shortly after he was rushed to the hospital. As a result of his death, there were many protests and demonstrations in New York City leading to the officer being fired for the illegal chokehold. In June 2020, the Eric Garner Anti-Chokehold Act was passed making it so that a police officer who injures or kills somebody through the use of a chokehold or similar restraint can be charged with a class C felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
