Ariel Russo Place (4 Years Old) (Manhattan)

Honoree: Ariel Russo was 4 years-old when she was killed on a sidewalk in June 2013 when an unlicensed teen driver jumped the curb while fleeing from the police and struck her. Records indicated a four-minute delay between the time EMS received the 9-1-1 call and the time an ambulance was dispatched. Her death led to the enactment of new procedures in the tracking of emergency response times. Her death was also a factor in the redesign of Amsterdam Avenue into a safer street.

James Russo Place (Staten Island)

Honoree: James Russo (1915-1995) was a D-Day veteran of World War II and a maintenance worker at Seaview Hospital. He was the son of Vito Russo, who had helped build Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grotto on Amity Street and who maintained the shrine on a daily basis. In 1955, after his father's death, James Russo took on the responsibility for maintaining the grotto, which he did every day until his own death in 1995.

Honoree: Joseph Russo (d. 2014) was born and raised in Spinoso, Italy, where he studied to be a mechanic. He immigrated to the United States in 1961 and by 1971 was able to open the first of many businesses. These including a used car lot in the late 1970s; a pizzeria and ice cream shop in 1981; a Hertz Penske Truck franchise and a limousine company in the 1980s; and an Italian restaurant in 1997. As a successful entrepreneur, he contributed generously to community causes. Notably, he donated $10,000 to Food for Guns, to be used for supermarket gift certificates in the effort to buy back guns and get them off the streets. He worked with the 120th Precinct Community Council for Children’s Christmas, and donated 1,000 pounds of pasta to Project Hospitality. For his support of these and other charitable groups, he received numerous awards and letters of commendation from civic organizations and public officials. (Rose)

Louis A. Russo Terrace (Staten Island)

Honoree: Louis A. Russo, who played the clarinet and the saxaphone, helped form the Staten Island Musicians Society which for many years presented free public concerts in Silver Lake Park and other venues in the borough. He was also the long-time commander of the Labetti Post of the VFW and was for 16 years on the Board of the Down Syndrome Learning Center. Mr. Russo died in 1992 at the age of 72.

Honoree: Mario Russo (1915-2002), a carpenter by trade, and worked on many of the Rockaway projects such as Hammels Houses, Arverne, Nordeck, Dayton and Surfside and later at the Green Acres shopping area. Prior to his retirement, Mario was head of the Somerville-Arverne Civic Association and served as President of the Arverne Civil Council Inc. for many years

Paul Russo Way (Queens)

Honoree: Paul Russo passed away in 2018 after a long and courageous battle with colorectal cancer. He was only 33 years old. Paul was a lifelong resident of Ozone Park and is fondly remembered as a young man of deep faith. Paul attended local public and parochial schools and was involved with local sports little leagues associations. He was also a member of the Frassati Fellowship of NYC, a Catholic group of young people dedicated to prayer and charity work. He participated in volunteer-led efforts to build homes for the homeless in the United States as well as Central and South America. Paul’s zeal for helping the poor was an inspiration to many others in the community. Paul is survived by his mother Anthe, and father George Russo, owner of the Villa Russo in Richmond Hill. He also left behind four siblings and many, many friends. (Ulrich)
