BarnardBarnard Way (Manhattan) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of 116th Street and Broadway Honoree: Barnard was established in 1889 in a rented brownstone at 343 Madison Avenue. It was named for Frederick A. P. Barnard, the recently deceased president of Columbia, who had argued for the admission of women to his institution but had been overruled by the Trustees. They did however, agree to accept an affiliated women's college. Barnard College moved to its present site in 1897. Although Columbia went co-ed in 1983, and Barnard women can enroll in courses at Columbia, Barnard has remained an autonomous institution. This co-naming marks its 125th anniversary.
