JudahWalter Jonas Judah Street (Manhattan) Present name:St. James Place Location:James Street and Oliver Street Honoree: Walter Jonas Judah, born 1778, was the first identifiable native-born Jewish student to attend an American medical school, Kings College, now known as Columbia University. In 1795, during his studies, a Yellow Fever Epidemic ravaged New York. While many others fled the City, he stayed to treat the sick. While doing so, he succumbed to Yellow Fever himself and died at the age of 22. (RGPR) LL:1999/57 |
