TaylorBishop Moses Taylor Way (Queens) Present name:None Location:Between 40th Avenue and 12th Street Honoree: Bishop Moses Taylor (1924-2004) founded The Long Island City Gospel Tabernacle as well as the Astoria Outreach Ministries and the Center of Hope International (COHI), which provides various services to the needy. LL:2012/14 Charlotte L. Taylor Way (Brooklyn) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of West 28th Street and Mermaid Avenue Honoree: Charlotte L. Taylor (1950-2020) lived in Coney Island and was a teacher at the head start school in Prospect Park and later at the Madeleine Jones Head Start until her retirement. She was a member of the Coney Island Gospel Assembly for 10 years where she was a lead singer on the choir and a Sunday school teacher. She also served as choir director for the youth choir, served in the pantry ministry, as well as the prison ministry. She was a member of the Coney Island Cathedral for 28 years and served on the Praise and Worship team, Mass Choir, Culinary Committee, Drama Ministry, Missionary Board, Outreach Ministry, President of the First Ladies Fellowship, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent of the Sunday School Department. She was also the coordinator for Children's Life Zone and Vacation Bible School where she supported the youth and community in all their annual events. She served on the Board of Directors for Urban Neighborhood Services; the Anti-Violence Collaborative; the Coney Island Sunday School Parade Committee; and the Senior Divas and assisted with YMCA Family Day. Although retired, she would read stories to the P.S. 188 kindergarteners and also taught arts and crafts to students of Junior High School 303. (Treyger) LL:2022/54 Darryl Anthony Taylor Street (Staten Island) Present name:none Location:Southeast corner of the intersection of Osgood Avenue and Vanderbilt Avenue Honoree: Darryl Anthony Taylor (b. 1949) was working for General Telecom at the World Trade Center when he was killed in the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. LL: 2004/63 Det. Raymond “Pally” Taylor Way (Staten Island) Present name:None Location:Northwest corner of Forest Avenue and Pelton Avenue Honoree: Raymond Taylor joined the NYPD in 1957. As a detective assigned to the Crimes Against Persons Squad on Staten Island, he arrested John Gotti for murder. He was instrumental in starting the NYPD’s Joint Organized Crime Task Force in the late 1960’s. LL: 2012/14 Dr. Billy Taylor Way (Manhattan) Present name:None Location:At the southeast corner of 138th Street and Fifth Avenue Honoree: Billy Taylor was pianist, composer, arranger, conductor, lecturer and author. He earned a doctorate in music education from the University of Massachusetts in 1975 and later had a higher profile on television than any other jazz musician of his generation. In 1965 he founded Jazzmobile, which presented free outdoor concerts throughout New York City. He lectured about jazz at music schools and wrote articles for DownBeat, Saturday Review and other publications on jazz. He wrote more than 300 compositions. (Dickens) LL:2013/131 Malik ‘Phife Dawg’ Taylor Way (Queens) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of 192nd Street and Linden Boulevard Honoree: Malik Taylor (1970-2016) was a rapper known as Phife Dawg. He was a member of A Tribe Called Quest, a hip-hop group from New York which broke up and reunited multiple times through the years. A Tribe Called Quest formed in 1985 and released five albums that sold millions of copies. The groups’ album 'Midnight Marauders' is often ranked as one of the best hip-hop albums of all-time. Taylor also released a solo album in 2000 called 'Ventilatio: Da LP.' He died of complications from diabetes. (Miller) LL:2016/92 Police Officer Deon L. Taylor Way (Bronx) Present name:Simpson Street Location:Between East 163rd Street and Westchester Avenue Honoree: Police Officer Deon Taylor (d. 2008) joined the NYPD in 2005, working first in the Transit Bureau and then the narcotics team. He was killed while serving his second military tour with the US Army in Afghanistan. LL:2011/03 |
