SciaccaMajor Joseph R. Sciacca Way (Staten Island) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of Fremont Avenue and North Railroad Avenue Honoree: Joseph R. Sciacca (1917-2018) was born in Manhattan's Little Italy but moved as a child to Grant City on Staten Island, where he lived until his death at the age of 100. He attended P.S. 33, P.S. 41 and Tottenville H.S., and went on to New York Law School and Fordham University. After U. S. Army service in World War II, he worked for Buitoni Foods Corporation from 1947 until 1989, rising to the position of regional sales manager. He was also Deputy Commissioner of the NYS Athletic Commission from 1965 to 1975. Mr. Sciacca was president of the Staten Island Council of the Boy Scouts of America; was active in St. Christopher's R.C. Church, where he was an usher for more than 50 years and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was also very active in the Knights of Columbus, Manresa Council, Richmond Memorial Hospital Association, Staten Island Cancer Society, and American Legion Post 316. He was on the Boards of Bayley Seton Hospital and of St. Elizabeth Ann Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was active in the Republican Party and held leadership positions including the Vice Chairmanship of the Richmond County Republican Committee from 1969 to 1972, and was a Delegate to the 1972 Republican National Convention.
