Honoree: On November 20, 2014, Akai Gurley, a 28-year-old public housing resident was fatally shot by New York City Police Department (“NYPD”) Police Officer Peter Liang in a darkened stairwell at the Louis H. Pink Houses in Brooklyn, New York. At a press conference on November 21, 2014, NYPD Commissioner William J. Bratton stated that the shooting appeared to be an accidental discharge. (Barron)
