Honoree: Mark Herman (1933-2016) led the progressive wing of the Democratic Party on Staten Island for 50 years and was one of the longest-serving members of a Democratic County Committee in NYS history. He was appointed a NYC Commissioner of Elections representing Staten Island in 2000, a post he held for several years. He also served the borough with his 23-year tenure on Community Board 1, including several terms as vice chairman. In addition, he was a manager for West Shore Little League; president of the Silver Lake Civic Association; a volunteer mediator/arbitrator with the NYS court system; and a docent at Fort Wadsworth. He participated in the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago and was a McGovern delegate at the 1972 convention in Miami. A U.S. Army veteran, he worked on Wall Street for 12 years and later became a branch manager for the former OTB, retiring in 1995. (Rose)
