Honoree: Leonard Stavisky (d. 1999) spent than 25 years in academia before entering public service as a deputy to the President of the New York City Council. In 1965, he was elected to the New York State Assembly, representing Flushing, Queens. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 1983 in a special election. In all, he served 34 years in the New York State Legislature, where his primary interest was in education.
