RodriguezArsenio Rodriguez Way (Bronx) Present name:Dawson Street Location:Between Intervate Avenue and Longwood Avenue Honoree: Arsenio Rodriguez (1911-1970), who was born in Cuba and was blinded in a childhood accident, is considered the “Father of Salsa Music.” He was the composer of over 200 songs. LL:2012/48 Firefighter Anthony Rodriguez Avenue (Staten Island) Present name:None Location:Intersection of Livingston Avenue and Holden Boulevard Honoree: Firefighter Anthony Rodriquez (b. 1964) died on September 11, 2001 during fire and rescue operations following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center LL:2003/62 George Rodriguez Way (Bronx) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of 149th Street and Morris Avenue Honoree: George Rodriguez (d. 2019) an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, was an activist for social justice and against discrimination. He helped establish Bronx Legal Services, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. As President of the Puerto Rican Community Development Project (PRCDP), Chairman of the New York City Model Cities Program-Innovative Programs for Low-Income Housing, President of “La Cruzada Civica del Voto,” and Grand Marshal and past President of the Puerto Rican Day Parade, he worked tirelessly in the community. He spent his career in public service creating scholarship programs for youth, building affordable housing, and paving the way for today’s political influence of the Puerto Rican/Latino community. Some of his other accomplishments include serving as Chairman of Community Board 1 and former Chairman of Community Board 2, Chairman of the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center’s Community Advisory Board, Chairman of the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation’s Council of Community Advisory Boards, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hunt’s Point Multi-Service Center. (Salamanca) LL:2022/54 Melanie Rodriguez Place (Bronx) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of Sherman Avenue and East 163rd Street Honoree: On May 10, 1988 Melanie Rodriguez (1928-2015) took over a parking lot next to the building she lived in on Sherman Avenue. With help from Community Board 4, The Trust For Public Land and GreenThumb, she secured funding to transform the the lot into the Sherman Avenue community garden. She allowed students from Junior High School 145, along with the community, to learn how to garden and learn facts on nutrition. She organized block parties and provided arts-and-crafts learning opportunities for children. In addition, she led many protests to protect funding for the community garden programs throughout the city. (Gibson) LL:2016/92 Pecola and Nicholas Rodriguez Way (Brooklyn) Present name:East 40th Street Location:Between Foster Avenue and Farragut Road Honoree: Pecola Rodriguez (1916 – 2014) was nurse and hosital administrator, working atSydenham Hospital in Harlem and later at Cumberland Hospital in Brooklyn. She joined the Cornerstone Baptist Church in the late 1940s and became the first President of its Business and Professional Women’s Group. She was also president of the Paerdegat Park Block Association and actively served on the Park and Library committees for Community Board 17, as well as nursing professional groups. Nicholas Rodriguez (1906 – 1995) was born in Panama. As a teenager, he organized the first Jazz Group in Panama. He came to New York in 1928 and began playing with Louis Armstrong, Benny Carter, Chick Webb, Cab Calloway and Don Redmond. He appeared at leading supper clubs and theaters in the United States, the Philippines and several East African cities; and recorded for several well-known recording companies of his time. (Williams) LL:2015/15 Robert Rodriguez Place (Manhattan) Present name:East 120th Street Location:Between First Avenue and Pleasant Avenue Honoree: Robert Rodriguez (1951-1994) was, in 1976, the youngest person ever elected to the City Council. In 1982 he became Director of Labor Relations for the NYFD. While still at the Council, He founded the East Harlem Multiservice Center (EHMC), located on this block, which helps thousands of East Harlem families each year. LL:2002/ 19 |
