At 18 he studied painting in Madrid but later became famous as a fashion designer. In 1961, while on vacation in Paris, he was hired at Lanvin-Castillo. Within two years, he had moved to New York and joined Elizabeth Arden. He began his own ready-to-wear label in 1965. He was known for distinctly modern yet romantic looks. His first perfume debuted in 1977. By the late '90s and early 2000s, his work became the preferred wear of American first ladies. He also started a furniture line. Known as a patron of the arts, he served on the boards of The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall and Channel Thirteen/WNET; and supported several other cultural institutions, including New Yorkers for Children, the Americas Society and the Spanish Institute.
