SeixasMill Street Synagogue/Seixas Way (Manhattan) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of Mill Lane and South William Street Honoree: Gershom Mendes Seixas (1745-1816) was the first American-born spiritual leader of Shearith Israel, whose first synagogue was built on Mill Street in 1730. Seixas was active in a wide range of civic organizations such as the Humane Society, the Board of Regents of the University of New York; and was a regent and trustee of Columbia College.
