Honoree: Hope Reichbach (1988-2011) was an aide to City Council Member Stephen Levin. She was on the threshold of a promising political career when she died of a mysterious drug overdose at the age of 22. While still in high school, where she had been an outstanding student and athlete, she successfully sued the Department of Defense (DOD) for its tactics in the military recruitment of people under 18 and the misuse of their personal data. As a legislative aide, she opposed cuts in city funding for local child care programs; and helped galvanize public support for important street safety measures. Since her death, her parents helped form the Hope Reichbach Fund, which partners with Brooklyn-based non-profits to provide paid internships for college students in New York City who are eager to work in the social justice field.
