SutterRev. Frederick Sutter and Rev. Carl Sutter Corner (Staten Island) Present name:None Location:Northeast corner of Beach Street and St. Pauls Avenue Honoree: Reverend Frederic Sutter became pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in 1907 and guided the building of the present church in 1913-1914. He was instrumental in the relocation of his alma mater, Wagner College, from Rochester N.Y. to Staten Island. He was succeeded by his son Carl. In World War II “Pastor Carl” helped organized a recreation center for some 7000 black troops stationed in Stapleton who were denied access to the local USO. He was also instrumental in advancing interfaith relationships on Staten Island. . Carl Sutter died in October 1998 at the age of 91. LL:2001/68 |
