Honoree: Wyatt Tee Walker, born in 1929, was the longtime senior pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of Christ and an early associate of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Under his leadership, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was a major factor in the Civil Rights movement. Rev. Walker was also responsible for $100 million in housing construction, as Chairman of the Consortium for Harlem Development.

Honoree: Solly Walker (1932-2017) was the first African-American basketball player for St. John’s University. He played from 1951-1954. In 1993, he was inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame and was also presented the Trustees Award by the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame. He was drafted by the New York Knicks but instead chose a career with the NYC Board of Education. He later became principal of the Manhattan School for the Mutli-Handicapped. (Cumbo)

Madam C.J. & A’Lelia Walker Place (Manhattan)

Honoree: Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919) developed and marketed a successful line of beauty and hair care products. A generous philanthropist, she donated to the NAACP and the YMCA, as well as black schools, orphanages and retirement homes. Her daughter A’Lelia Walker hosted many artists, writers, musicians and actors of the Harlem Renaissance at the Dark Tower, a floor of her 136th Street townhouse near Lenox Avenue.
