GarciaMarlyn Carmen Garcia Way (Brooklyn) Present name:None Location:Intersection of 43rd Street and 8th Avenue Honoree: Marlyn Carmen Garcia (b. 1980) worked for Marsh & McLennan at the World Trade Center. She was killed in the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. LL:2004/08 P.O. Joseph Garcia Place (Staten Island) Present name:Clinton Avenue Location:Between Prospect Avenue and Henderson Avenue Honoree: Joseph Robert Garcia (1940-1975) served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman in Korea. After his discharge, Joseph Garcia joined the New York City Police Department. He died in the line of duty on January 20, 1975 as a result of wounds received while in pursuit of two robbery suspects. LL:2001/60 Police Officer Jill Garcia Place (Bronx) Present name:Cross Bronx Expressway Location:Between Park Avenue and Washington Avenue Honoree: Police Officer Jill Garcia (1975-2009), assigned to the 48th Precinct, worked on patrol and as part of the Domestic Violence Unit. In March 2009, she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and died later that year. Jill used her bilingual talents in particular to help those most vulnerable to domestic violence, immigrant women. LL:2011/03 Yolanda Garcia Way (Bronx) Present name:Third Avenue Location:Both sides of the street, from 156th Street to 159th Street Honoree: Yolanda Garcia was 53 when she died in February 2005. She was one of the founders of Nos Quedamos/We Stay, a community group that worked to prevent evictions of people who lived and worked in her Melrose neighborhood. LL:2008/48 |
