D'AltoCono D’ Alto Way (Brooklyn) Present name:None Location:At the southwest corner of Graham Avenue and Conselyea Street Honoree: Italian-born Cono D’Alto (1947-2009), a Vietnam veteran, worked in various Italian restaurants and owned a pizzeria before opening Mamma Maria Salumeria, named after his mother, in 1992. It became an institution in “Italian Williamsburg.” If local schools needed food for fundraisers, if the nearby senior center needed support for programming, or if a family needed help clothing their newborn, he donated generously. On September 11, 2001, he extended help to first responders, leaving his business open for police officers and firefighters. Thereafter, Mamma Maria Salumeria donated food and funds for families of the deceased and for their memorial services. (Reynoso) LL:2019/158 |
