Honoree: Alice Cardona (1930-2011) was a leader in New York's Puerto Rican and Latino community. She was the author of Puerto Rican Women Achievers in New York City. In the 1960s, she was program coordinator for United Bronx Parents, facilitating parental involvement in the school system and youth programs. She was also involved with the first Head Start program in New York and worked at ASPIRA as a counselor for youth. From 1983 to 1995 she was assistant director of the NYS Division for Women under Governor Mario Cuomo. She advocated for bilingual education and women, including those in prison. She also worked to fight HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, and domestic violence. She was the director of the Puerto Rican Association for Community Affairs and cofounder of Atrévete, a voter registration and political participation program. (Van Bramer)

Detective Robert A. Cardona Way (Manhattan)

Honoree:  Detective Robert Cardona died in March 2020 from complications of COVID-19 contracted from a presumed exposure while on duty. At the time he contracted COVID-19, he was also in remission of 9/11- related cancer that he developed following exposure to hazardous materials during search and recovery efforts after the attack on the World Trade Center. Detective Cardona had served with the New York City Police Department for 18 years and was assigned to the 13th Precinct Detective Squad. (Ayala)

Location:At the intersection of Rochelle Street and City Island Avenue
Honoree: Pepe Cardona (d. 2020) was the lead singer and band leader of ALIVE N KICKIN. He burst onto the music scene in the 70's with "Tighter, Tighter," which sold over 2 million copies and led to national TV appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and The Mike Douglas Show, among others. The band was active for over 50 years and gained a loyal following for its concerts, including the annual City Island Concert Series. He was very supportive of his City Island community, raising money for various causes until his death from cancer at the age of 72. (Gjonaj)
