HowardChanta Howard Way (Queens) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of Hassock Street and Beach Channel Drive Honoree: Chanta Monique Howard (d. 2019) was president of the Redfern Housing Advisory Board; served as manager of the Stack Angels Dance group; co-founded the Rockaway Female Softball league; and she was a pillar of the NYCHA Redfern Housing commnity. She organized barbeque events and provided free school supplies for students. She also founded the Redfern’s Fallen Angels, an event honoring former residents of Redfern who had lost their lives to gun violence or sickness. She also organized the It Takes a Village to Raise a Child event to honor all the seniors in the development by providing certificates labeled as Redfern Heroes. (Richards) LL:2021/14 Rev. Maggie Howard Way (Staten Island) Present name:None Location:At the southeast corner of Tompkins Avenue and Tompkins Street Honoree: Dr. Maggie Howard (1963-2020) was born and raised in New York City and lived in Staten Island's Stapleton Houses. She received her associate degree in finance from the College of Staten Island; a bachelor’s degree in Theology from Boulden Seminary in Delaware; and also took doctoral studies. Howard was ordained in 1991 and was designated lead pastor of Stapleton A.M.E, the oldest African-American church in Staten Island, in 2000. She was a pillar of the community, providing counseling and mentoring services, working with organizations such as FEMA’s Project Hope for Hurricane Sandy victims. She worked to better the neighborhood as a mediator in the Cease Fire Program, an NYPD initiative to prevent gang-related violence; Peer Recovery Coach, and was a Citizens Police Academy graduate. She spread her inspirational message of education and social justice to Stapleton and around the world through her missionary work until her death in 2020. (Rose) LL:2022/54 William ‘Bill’ Howard Sr. Way (Brooklyn) Present name:None Location:At the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and Dean Street Honoree: William Howard (1943-2018) was a businessman, political strategist and supporter of Brooklyn’s Caribbean-American culture. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was Finance Chair for Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and served as the President of the Brooklyn's West Indian-American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA). As a vice president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, he was involved with making multi-million-dollar loans to municipalities, corporations and individuals. He served on the board of Brooklyn’s Jewish Hospital, later merged with Interfaith Hospital Center, where he chaired the finance committee. He was a City University of New York board member from 1983 to 1995. A lifelong friend of Shirley Chisholm, he served as first vice president of the Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute for Children. He was also instrumental in the honoring of Ms. Chisholm with the naming of a post office in Crown Heights, the issuance of commemorative stamp, and, given her career in early childhood education, the establishment of a child care center.
