Honoree: Steven McDonald (1957-2017) joined the NYPD in 1984. In 1986, at the age of 29, he was shot by a 15-year-old boy in Central Park and became paralyzed from the neck down. He forgave his assailant and made many public appearances over the years spreading the message of forgiveness to the public. The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award has been presented each NHL season since 1987-88 to the Rangers player who goes above and beyond the normal call of duty. Gertrude McDonald Way (Queens)

Honoree: Gertrude McDonald (1917-2017) was a long-time community activist who served on Community Board 2 for over 40 years and held positions at the 108th Precinct Community Council and the United Forties Civic Association. She was an active member of Sunnyside Community Services. In 1968, she was the first woman to run for elected office as a Democrat in Queens. Although her campaign for a seat in the New York State Assembly was unsuccessful, she helped lay the foundation for other women to run for office and win. She continued to help pave the way for women in Queens politics until her passing on March 21, 2017 at the age of 100. (Van Bramer)

Police Officer Sean A. McDonald Memorial Plaza (Bronx)

Location:The triangle bounded bounded by Jerome Avenue, Gerard Avenue and East 169th Street.
Honoree: Sean A. McDonald joined the NYPD in 1992 and was assigned to the 44th Precinct. On the evening of March 15, 1994, he was mortally wounded while attempting to arrest two robbers he saw running from a store. He was 26 years old. He was the first uniformed officer of the 44th Precinct to be killed in the line of duty since the establishment of the Precinct in 1888.

Honoree: Willie McDonald (d. 2008), was involved with feeding the homeless for over 30 years. He was also a very active member of Community Board 2 and Vice President of the Warren Street Houses Tenant Association.
