Honoree: Bertha Simons Lee (1930-2014) was an active member of St. Philips Baptist Church. She served as a member of the board of trustees; as financial secretary; as president of the Senior Usher Board; and as executive chairperson of the Charles K. Smith Scholarship Committee, which offered college scholarships to high school seniors who were members of the church and non-members in the community. Ms. Lee was also active in the Staten Island community a a member of the National Association of Negro Women of Staten Island; Community Board 1; the Port Richmond Neighborhood Watch Committee; the Staten Island NAACP; and a board member of the Northfield LDC. He collapsed after chasing and struggling to capture a trio of robbery suspects and later died in Lenox Hill Hospital.
