Honoree: Ben Marino (d. 1988) was was a businessman and civic leader in New Dorp. In the early 1980s, he became the president of the New Dorp Merchants Association. He donated to many organizations including local little league teams, Pee Wee football, beauty pageants, spelling bees, girls' softball, and the Miss Staten Island scholarship. He was awarded the “Gold Broom Award” for his active role in cleaning up litter in his community. The Deborah Heart and Lung Association honored him as “Man of the Year” for his charitable work. For his dedication to the community, November 18, 1980 was proclaimed “Ben Marino Day” by the Staten Island Borough President. (Matteo)
