Wells (1862-1931) was an African-American journalist, abolitionist and feminist who led an anti-lynching crusade in the United States in the 1890s. She went on to found and become integral to groups fighting for African-American justice. She was a teacher who became a vocal critic of the condition of African-American-only schools in Memphis, and established the first African-American kindergarten in her community. In 1896, she formed the National Association of Colored Women and later became a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
