Honoree: Congregation Shearith Israel, founded in 1654, is the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. Its first building, erected in 1730, was located about 200 feet east of here, on what is now called Mill Lane. The present Shearith Israel Synagogue is at Central Park West and 70th Street. Gershom Mendes Seixas (1745-1816) was the first American-born spiritual leader of Congregation Shearith Israel. He was active in a wide range of civic organizations such as the Humane Society and the Board of Regents of the University of New York, and was a regent and trustee of Columbia College.
